tagcloud-cropIs alcohol ruining your life?

Most drinkers want to cut down their habit rather than eliminate it from their life. In this way, the work will be quite different from smoking where the vast majority of people choose to eradicate it from their life.  For alcohol, again I use a lot of visualization and suggestion through both hypnosis and NLP and get clients to start seeing themselves and managing without the dependence. Much of the work may also involve thinking about what else the client may need in their life if there is going to be a change in drinking habits. As with smoking, success will involve examining all major areas concerned with the habit, addiction, cravings, stress, emotional and psychological factors. I like clients to think deeply about their drinking.

I am boozing a lot less now, I just don’t have the need or desire to go out and have other things in my life. Even if I do, I don’t have to go over the limit, you know.’ (45 year-old female designer)

Do you need to stop taking drugs?
Most people who came to see me with drug habits will clearly want to be free of them and start to lead a life without these substances. I have worked with addicts of cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and other substances. In all cases, I will use lot of visualization and suggestion through both hypnosis and NLP and get clients to start seeing themselves and managing without the dependence.  Much of the work may also involve thinking about what else the client may need in their life if there is going to be a different sort of life without the drugs.  There may be a need to examine many areas in the client’s life including the habit, addiction, cravings, stress, emotional and psychological factors.

Do you have difficulties with weight control?
There are so many weight loss diets around, and they generally don’t work in the long term. They usually involve depriving yourself of certain foods in order to lose weight. But for many people diets are not a permanent solution, because as soon as the desired weight is achieved they go back to their old eating habits. I work with people who in different ways are struggling with managing their weight; this ranges from those who are simply trying to make some changes and reductions in their food intake and cravings to those with more pervasive problems and disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia and obesity.Hypnotherapy enables direct access to the unconscious mind, to help change old eating habits and resolve any emotional reasons for over-eating, binge eating or starvation. Hypnotherapy and NLP can allow you to have a change of attitude towards the food that you eat, so that you no longer want to snack on crisps or chocolates, for example, or finish everything on your plate even if you are not hungry. This enables you to enjoy eating healthily and at the same time lose weight in a safe and natural way.I use a combination of a number of therapies including hypnotherapy, NLP, and counselling to help explore the problem and help people go about achieving their goal, both in terms of their desired weight/size/shape and the psychological state that comes with it. Diets and other strategies may work for a short while but evidence suggests their long term success is debatable.  My work will work on getting clients to think deeply about all psychological factors associated with the problem including the history, triggers and current patterns.

I feel so much better since going for some hypnotherapy and have stopped bingeing on food at night and feeling terrible about myself. I have now started doing more for myself and not just for the children. (40 year-old housewife/mother)

I now find myself shopping and cooking sensibly. I have started to have normal patterns of eating meals at sensible times. (27 year old theatre director)

Do you have difficulties getting to sleep or waking up?
Sleep problems are surprisingly common and generally occur at a stressful point in our lives such as before a big event or following a traumatic one. Often our sleep problems will only last for a short period of time and within a few days or weeks, we will revert to our normal sleep patterns. Chronic Insomnia is a more debilitating condition and is characterised by the sufferer experiencing severe sleep problems for weeks, months or even years. The symptoms can include difficulty getting to sleep at night or problems staying asleep for a reasonable period of time. Alternatively the sufferer may have difficulties getting back to sleep once they have woken during the night or then may find themselves waking up too early each day. A lack of sleep can have a huge impact on our lives as it creates tiredness, irritability and problems with our concentration which can lead to further medical issues in the future. There are numerous reasons why your sleep may be disrupted but the most common include depression, environmental changes (noise, temperature), medical conditions such as high blood pressure, chronic pain, stimulants (e.g. caffeine), and stress about life situation (e.g. money, family). Since the deeper trance states of hypnosis are a stage between consciousness and sleep, light hypnotherapy work can help with basic relaxation. Using NLP, you will be asked to examine your sleep patterns and remove any external causes that may be contributing towards insomnia. Sleep inductions can give you the ammunition to fall asleep using self hypnosis and use it for early wakings.

Sleeping is a lot easier. (45 year-old civil servant)

Do you want to stop smoking?
Smoking is considered to be the greatest single cause of premature death in the UK.  There is abundant research and science telling us just how bad smoking is for our health and yet for many, it is an incredibly hard habit to break. People often start smoking out of curiosity, peer pressure or out of boredom and before long, an addiction is formed.  Willpower alone will not be sufficient for quitting this kind of physical and mental addiction.  It will be necessary to investigate the effects of smoking, learning what you’ll gain from quitting and discovering all the different ways you can quit is an important first step to breaking the habit.  I tend to use a lot of visualisation when working with smokers to get them to start seeing themselves free of their habit.  I use both hypnosis and NLP and try to get clients to move away from both the will power techniques and the use of gums, patches and similar alternatives.   Smoking can be quick to remove but may take longer if there are blocks.  Success will involve examining all major areas concerned with the habit, addiction, cravings, stress, emotional and psychological factors. I like clients  to think deeply about their smoking habits.

Do you want to learn to cope better with stress? Are you a stressed out person?
Stress is a huge problem in the Western world with many people reacting to stress by needing to take time off and allowing its effects to build up so much so that it has a negative effect on their physical as well as their emotional health.  As we are aware either directly or indirectly, an avoidance of dealing with stress can impinge upon all areas of our life from work to family to relationships to leisure.Stress is the way in which our bodies react to a change that requires a physical, psychological or behavioural response. Each person reacts to stress in different ways and some of us cope better at managing it than others. Our responses to stress may also differ depending on other events that are happening in our lives. If you are experiencing problems at work, issues with your partner or money worries, then your response to the stress is likely to be much more severe. The impact of stress on the body can take many forms but as we know, our heart rates increase, our blood pressure rises and our breathing intensifies. Much of my work involves helping identify the source of stress and exploring how it impacts upon one’s life. I work a lot with clients who are under great stress in their lives and again draw upon many sources including mindfulness meditation, hypnotherapy, NLP and more conventional counselling.  With stress management, besides the immediate need to manage the problem in the here and now so that the client can function, there is often the need to explore the client’s history and patterns.  I am often interested in the client’s interpretation of events, not just in the events themselves that appear to be impacting upon the client.

Saul was tremendously effective in relieving my anxiety symptoms within a very short time.  During subsequent sessions he consolidated this work and I have benefited hugely both in work and other areas.  Having seen several other therapists over the years, Saul is by far and away the most effective and I would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone with similar issues’. (48 year-old consultant)‘I am learning to deal with my anxieties about retirement. (55 year-old teacher)

Do you feel down and depressed for no reason?
Depression is a complex multidimensional problem that nearly everyone experiences at some point to varying degrees. Depression afflicts millions of people every year. For some, it is only a brief episode which occurs only once in their life time. However, for many it is either chronic or recurrent, and can significantly hamper their lives. It can become a very pervasive and debilitating condition, and for some even lead to self-harm and suicide.  Whilst drug companies bring out various psychoactive treatments, these do not work for everyone, can cause side effects, bring dependency and do not get to the actual root of the problem. Hypnosis has become recognized as a potentially effective treatment for many individuals with depression. Some recent studies have shown that it is more effective than cognitive-behavioral therapy, which is the most common therapy approach in treating clinical depression. While it does not work for everyone, it can definitely be worth considering if depression is seriously affecting your life and other types of treatment have not been helpful.Hypnosis for depression can help address the roots as well as help individuals develop more effective coping behaviours. It can also help people achieve a happier mood and decrease or remove negative thought patterns that often accompany depression. Hypnotherapy for depression will normally use a combination of suggestion and imagery to bring about positive changes in the unconscious processes of the depressed individual. People who undergo hypnosis for this disorder will often experience a new sense of freedom, self control over their thoughts, feelings, mood, and their life in general.Hypnosis can used to soothe anxiety, break negative patterns, increase reactivity, motivation and build positivity.  Through NLP, it is possible that thought processes and other patterns can be addressed. A combination of self hypnosis and ‘tasks’ can be used to turn things around. The treatment can help to change your negative thought processes, to incorporate new more beneficial responses into your life, to become a happier and healthier person, to create a positive future, to bring joy into daily living and to feel good again.

Are you allowing fears and phobias limit your life?
With more generalised or free floating anxiety, this involves working with the client to understand how thoughts and feelings influence behaviour and educating the unconscious mind to respond more calmly and rationally to stressful situations. The goal of the therapy is to change negative thought patterns that lead to the client’s anxiety, replacing them with positive, more realistic ones. Regular practice of self-hypnosis and meditation can also be very beneficial in aiding relaxation. I work by helping the individual develop more positive ways of thinking and acting in such situations. Besides free-floating or generalised anxiety that can interfere with people’s lives, there are others who are blighted by more specific anxieties or phobias, whether these are related to flying, heights, small spaces (claustrophobia), open spaces (agoraphobia), social anxiety, bridges, spiders, needles, or others!  Phobias are the most common form of anxiety disorder and believed to affect up to a quarter of individuals in the Western world.  For some individuals, it can be mildly distressing but manageable. For others it can be seriously debilitating. A phobia is an irrational fear of a particular stimulus.  People with phobias will either go to great lengths to avoid whatever it is they fear, or they will tolerate it with considerable anxiety. For some people, a phobia can trigger panic attacks. In severe cases the phobia can end up literally controlling a person’s life.In such cases, I will often use hypnosis and NLP with plenty of positive visualisation and suggestion so that clients can learn to reframe the particular object they are scared of.  Hypnotherapy works by accessing the underlying cause of the phobia and eliminating the person’s conditioned response to the stimulus. When hypnosis is used to treat a phobia, the initial goal of the hypnotherapist is to discover the initial event from which the phobia developed. The cause is often a traumatic event which occurred at an earlier time in the person’s life. The number of sessions required for effectively dealing with phobias varies, and depends on several factors. These factors include how long the person has had the phobia, how severely the phobia affects him, the person’s maturity, his personality structure, and how determined he is to be free from the phobia. In general, it will take approximately three or four sessions. However, in severe cases it can take longer. I do teach a lot of self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques which can be hugely beneficial both with specific phobias and more generalised anxiety and stress. I am keen for clients to use the self hypnosis as one of the tools to help them become more skilled in getting into a relaxed state. Some of this will be done through learning better how to relax deeply, organising thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can manage anxiety better.

Do you lack confidence and want to change?
Confidence is key!  If you believe in yourself and your abilities, any form of self improvement becomes easier.  We all know that many of the limitations that hold us back are often our own inventions. Confidence is a state of mind and once you have it, nothing can hold you back. When we view ourselves in the mirror, it’s not so much what we see, but how we see, that speaks volumes about our feelings of self-worth. If we have become used to seeing ourselves as useless, inadequate or flawed in some way, then we will perpetuate that perception and project it into the world and allow for it to impact upon all the negative consequences on our life.  Through hypnosis and NLP, I set out to change the internal image to one that is beneficial and positive, allowing the client to project into the world a person who is confident and aware of their own strengths.  I use a lot of affirmation, suggestion and visualisation to help change this perception.Through hypnotherapy and NLP, you can increase your confidence and self esteem. This confidence may be specific to challenging situation such as exams, interviews and public speaking, or it may be more generalized to many different situations.  Many individuals have confidence issues relating to social situations in general.  Using hypnosis and NLP, clients will be shown how they can take control over situations. I set out to help you learn not to be inhibited by the critic inside you.  We are all prone to focus on the negative at the expense of the positive.  You will be able to learn new strategies, solutions, actions and use more positive useful suggestions.

Do you lack motivation and energy?
Some people may go through a period where they feel a lack of motivation, drive and zest for life.  Motivation is the fuel that allows us to function as active human beings, from getting  outo f bed in the mornings to going to work to studying to looking for work to doing a range of other social or leisure pursuits.  Through hypnotherapy, NLP and life coaching, you can learn new ways of energizing and directing yourself in one or more domains in your life, whether this is related to profession/career/study, social life, exercise/health, or any other.

I now know what I want to do and have started making plans at work. (33 year old woman)

I have learned to take control of my life and have started evening courses, had discussions about changes at work and even made some changes in my leisure life. (40 year old working mother)

Do you have difficulties in relationships?
We all live in a complex and dynamic world where we are presented with a range of relationships that may be challenging at times to negotiate.  These include personal/romantic ones, family ones (e.g. ones with parents, children or siblings), friendships/social acquaintances and more professional ones.  There are a whole myriad of problems that may come with relationships.  Within personal/romantic ones, people struggle with entering into new ones, developing a trusting bond, coping with conflicts, and dealing with the loss or ending.  Within more historical family relationships, my vast experience in child development and attachment makes this an area that I am especially interested in, for example, in making sense of a fractured relationship with a parent that appears to be impeding upon their life.  Within more general social interactions, some individuals come to see me have anxieties in relation to social situations whether it’s with people they know or don’t.  Within professional situations, again some individuals may come to see me with struggles with working with colleagues or superiors.Using hypnotherapy, NLP and life coaching, you will be made to reframe the relationships and learn new strategies. Often, in any relationship, there is inadequate communication skills, ill-defined or inappropriate expectations, poor self esteem, fears of intimacy or commitment, and other barriers to effective relationships.  Hypnosis and NLP may be used to clarify these expectations, increase the level of motivation to resolve differences within the relationship, enhance communication skills, and resolve unconscious conflicts about intimacy and commitment.

I have learned to see my mother in a different way and communication has improved so much! (45 year old housewife)

Do you have difficulties managing your emotions?
Whether it is anger, sadness, jealousy, envy, or disgust, NLP and hypnotherapy can attempt to access these emotions.  On the continuum of emotional management, people at both ends could benefit from some work: those people who are very out of touch with their emotions can be shown how to access the more difficult but therapeutic emotions, whilst those people who are out of control of their emotions can be taught strategies to modify them. I teach clients to make positive changes by controlling their own reactions.  Though anger and frustration are completely normal and often useful emotions, when they become out of control, they can cause problems regarding health, personal relationships, work and social situations and to the general enjoyment of life.  I use hypnosis, visualisation and direct suggestion to help clients change how events affect them.

I have learned through hypnosis and NLP to step back from confrontation and arguments.  I have learned strategies not to react and it is helping both my physical and mental health. (40 year-old housewife)

Do you want to learn to help heal physical illness?
Doctors will often prescribe pain killers and even anti-depressants in order to help people manage pain but in many cases this will not totally solve the problem. This is because pain is not only physical but in many cases psychological as well and tablets cannot address the element of pain which is linked with the mind. This often leaves patients feeling depressed and helpless because their quality of life is being impacted by the pain and in many cases this can make their perception of the pain worseHypnosis itself can help change your perception of pain.  It has been successfully used as a sole or principle anesthetic even in major surgeries, where there has been physical damage.  Using pain management strategies you can lead a more fulfilling life and for many may even be able to tolerate medical intervention and surgery with no anesthetic.   It is also used with minor dental extractions and surgery.  Hypnosis has been applied to successfully to the treatment of a wide variety of medical problems, including burns, cancer, asthma, allergies, hypertension, and IBS. Hypnosis may additionally help the individual recover following the surgery and at the same time giving the client some sense of control over their condition.Above all, hypnosis and mindfulness can also enhance the body’s natural immune system. You can heal yourself with the right attitude’.

Are you afraid of giving birth?
Specifically related to pain control, hypnobirthing is an example of a pain management technique which is becoming so mainstream that the NHS is conducting major studies into its benefits.  Hypnobirthing can help prepare expectant mothers and fathers for the impending labour and birth.  Using hypnosis, you can be taught to reduce/eliminate the anxiety and unpredictable and unfamiliar anxiety that goes with it, produce more relaxation, lessen the need to use medication, and enabling the labour to become shorter, easier, more positive and self-contained.

I used many of the techniques and it definitely made the labour stage easier as I had so many things like visualisation to use which could take me to an easier place where I could be me and be in control. (29 year old mother)

Are you looking to make some changes in your life? ?
Life coaching with some bolstering hypnotherapy can be very effective for those either in transitional states in life or anxious about impending change or uncertainty in their lives, whether it is in work, relationships, familial circumstances, geographical location, or any other life stressor.  Life coaching can often be about dejunking negative aspects of your life whilst recapturing the more positive elements.  This dejunking journey can take in a vast amount of space covering your surroundings (your home), your image (how your look), your body (your diet and exercise), your time and much else.  Life coaching will empower you with strategies to incorporate into your life.  When I work with clients in a life-coaching mode, we work in a very goal-orientated manner, setting goals, breaking down the goals and exploring both the larger and more holistic picture in an individual’s life as well as the specific area which maybe they are presenting as being a priority.

Do you want to enhance your performance in sport?
I have always been fascinated with performance whether in relation to sports or a more artistic arena.  I am able to draw upon many of my skills and experiences from conventional psychology and counselling, NLP, hypnosis and life coaching, but I have supplemented this more general training with a specialised qualification in sports NLP/hypnosis so that I can channel these skills for those athletes (professional and amateur) who are keen to have a psychological command over their performance.  Sports hypnosis and NLP will help ensure that your mental skills match your physical ones.  Mental training is about maximising your potential in your sporting discipline and includes many of the areas I would already focus upon with other conditions, however, I am interested in helping athletes ‘get in the zone’, prepare for a perfect performance through drawing on previous and future memories and fantasies, and remaining focused and concentrated when it matters. I am also interested in the physical nature of being an athlete so I work around breathing control, muscular and mental relaxation, and managing pain and injuries that may be alleviated through mind control.  I am really keen to help ‘performers’ (athletes or non-athletes) to use imagery to help them increase confidence, control and success.I will do individual work with athletes to focus on improving their performance through mental strengthening.

I feel more focused now when I am playing a big tennis game and I’m on that court’.(19 year old amateur tennis player).
I used to get terrible nerves whenever I was at a big swimming gala and my performances used to drop. Now I can use what Saul has shown me. (22 year old amateur swimmer)

Do you want to enhance your performance in sport or drama?
I am interested in optimising individuals’ capacity to learn and perform.  Hypnosis and NLP can help make you look at the obstacles that are making it more difficult for you to perform and reach your goals.  Almost always, the obstacles are conditions that cause anxiety.  The most common ones are often fear of failing, fear of being humiliated, fear of competition and feelings of intimidation.  It is possible to eliminate these obstacles to maximize your performance and enjoyment, modify your attitude and rid yourself of any physical symptoms that inhibit performance.   Hypnosis and NLP can help you maximize and improve all learning experiences in your life.  Besides a focus on self esteem and motivation, additional factors are poor study habits, poor memory, absence of reward, and fear.Hypnosis and NLP can help by pinpointing the inhibiting factors and then setting up a plan to perceive the learning experience as an opportunity to gain a positive attitude about it, to change habits and procedures that are detrimental to the learning experience and to improve confidence and self esteem.

I am more productive in writing at the moment. I am trying to write a novel and have found the discipline and clarity of mind to produce lots. (36 year old writer)
